At the turn of the last century, life was hard and people didn't give much thought to health care for pets. Most of the care available was for farm and utility animals. In the city, health care was provided for horses by farriers -- those who shoed the horses.
That all changed here in 1909 when Dr. Erle Case, the first college educated health care practitioner for animals in Savannah, opened his veterinary hospital.
As the century wore on and technology developed, replacing horses with automobiles as the primary means of transportation, society became less and less utilitarian. The need to care for farm and utility animals declined and the demand for domestic pet care rose. Dr. Erle Case pursued this innovative direction early on and opened a dog and cat hospital.
A generation later, his son, Francis Case, followed in his footsteps, further developing the practice into high quality pet care.
His son, Dr. Jerry Case, foregoing earlier temptations towards a career in civil emergency and rescue operations, took over the practice in 1981, continuing the Case tradition of high quality pet care and far-sighted innovation in the field with the building of the new Case Hospital today. Case hospital is one of the first veterinary hospitals to be wired directly to the internet. Today, Dr. Case is working to provide his customers with a wide range of online services that are rarely found in most modern veterinary hospitals...or human hospitals for that matter. Such services as making medical records available on line, appointments on line, email reminders and on line billing are anticipated to be available in the Case system sometime in the next few months. Combine this with the advanced diagnostic, surgical, routine care, grooming and boarding and you have the one place in Savannah and South Georgia where you should bring the pets you care about the most.
And it doesn't end there. In 1999, Carla Case-McCorvey joined the Case practice as the first female Case veterinarian. Only time will tell how she will continue to build this dynamic practice for the future.
